Hiking on Møn

Trails, routes and tips. Klinteskoven, Camønoen, Ulvshale and Nyord with lengths, stairs, rules and gear

Photo: Daniel Villadsen / VisitDenmark

Møn is good walking country. Three routes through the Klinteskoven and along the cliffs start at the GeoCenter Møns Klint (2.3, 6.1 and 14.5 km), the Camønoen long-distance trail runs 175 km around Møn, Bogø and Nyord, and the Ulvshale peninsula has five short circular walks. At the GeoCenter the exhibition (155 DKK) and parking (45 DKK) cost money; the paths themselves are freely accessible.

The table shows the main routes. Lengths and durations come from the operators (as of October 2026); where no duration is given, there is a dash.

Hiking at Møns Klint and in the Klinteskoven

The Klinteskoven is the forest behind the chalk cliff. The routes start at the GeoCenter and run along the edge or deeper into the forest. The GeoCenter describes them like this:

  • Fossilruten (2.3 km): through the southern part of the Klint, partly right on the beach and partly in the forest, with a fossil site at the end.
  • Biodiversitetsruten (6.1 km): forest paths along the cliff edge and into the Klinteskoven, hilly, with notes on biodiversity.
  • Klintekongens Rige (14.5 km): the GeoCenter calls it "Europe's best hiking route". It runs through one of the hilliest parts of Denmark to the great natural and cultural sites of the Høje Møn.

The map in the Naturstyrelsen leaflet (Turfolder no. 53, 2026 edition) also shows the Klintestien at 7.7 km, the Klintholm Gods Skovruten at 7.4 km, the Klintholm Gods Orkidéruten at 6.2 km and the Kridtstien at 2.3 km; the same map gives 14.0 km for Klintekongens Rige, against the GeoCenter's 14.5 km. Naturstyrelsen also describes tours without a stated length: the north tour from the GeoCenter car park to Dronningestolen, Forchhammers Pynt and the "face of the Cliff King", back via the stairs at Røde Udfald; the south tour past Freuchens Pynt; the Grimsdalen tour from Havrelukke through the forest to the Sandskredsfaldet; and the Jydelejet tour to the cliff edge at Aborrebjerg. Dronningestolen drops 128 m to the sea, and Aborrebjerg is 143 m high (Naturstyrelsen). Background on the chalk is on the page Chalk cliffs of Møn, geology on the page Møn's geology, and the GeoCenter Møns Klint has an exhibition.

Stairs at Møns Klint

Five staircases link the cliff edge with the beach. The Maglevandstrappen at the GeoCenter has 497 steps and, according to Naturstyrelsen, is the longest staircase in Denmark; the Grårygtrappen has 468 steps. There is also a staircase down at Røde Udfald, but Naturstyrelsen gives no number of steps. Between the Grårygtrappen and the Maglevandstrappen you walk directly along the beach, where chalk blocks and fossils such as sea urchins and belemnites lie. Allow for the climb back up; it takes effort.

Day loop at the cliff: 8 to 11 km

There is no single marked route of 8 to 12 km at the cliff, but you can put one together from the marked paths. The lengths come from the GeoCenter and from the Naturstyrelsen map (as of October 2026):

  • Variant from the GeoCenter, 8.4 km: the Fossilruten (2.3 km, 1 hr 15 min) and the Biodiversitetsruten (6.1 km, 2 hrs) one after the other, a good 3 hours of walking in all. Both routes start at the GeoCenter, where you park for 45 DKK.
  • Variant from Camp Møns Klint, 10.7 km: you park free at Camp Møns Klint, walk the Kridtstien (2.3 km) through the forest to the GeoCenter, do the Biodiversitetsruten (6.1 km) and take the Kridtstien back. The Kridtstien is a cycle and walking path and runs traffic-free through the Klinteskoven.

The stairs to the beach come on top if you visit the fossil site at the water: the Maglevandstrappen has 497 steps, so down and back up again is 994. For a bite to eat there is Café Møns Klint at the GeoCenter, which in winter is closed along with the GeoCenter. There is no GPX download for these loops; the paths are marked and shown on the map in the Naturstyrelsen leaflet (Turfolder no. 53), which is available as a PDF on naturstyrelsen.dk. For the long route at the cliff, the Klintekongens Rige walk is in the table above.

Camønoen long-distance trail

The Camønoen is 175 km long and runs across Møn, Bogø and Nyord. According to Museum Sydøstdanmark the trail consists of ten stages and two shortcuts (as of October 2026). It is marked with the Camøno symbol and can be walked in stages, over a weekend or in full. Maps and passes are available in the Camøno shop and in the shop of Møns Museum in Stege, which is also the start. The stage names below follow the English version of museerne.dk.

For a single day the Juniper Stage is a good choice, which according to museerne.dk is almost flat and suitable for beginners and families, as is the Cliff Stage with its view of Møns Klint. The Surf Stage has no accommodation along the way. If you want to camp on the Camønoen, you may do so only at designated sites.

Camønoen in three days

Three stages in a row make 51.1 km and suit a long weekend: you start in Stege, finish at the cliff and sleep in a different place each night.

Lengths and difficulty come from museerne.dk; the operator gives no walking times. On Nyord the Hyldevang Naturcenter has four shelters, which you book in advance; at Møns Klint you book Lille Ørnebjerg or Storeklint at book.naturstyrelsen.dk (as of October 2026). museerne.dk lists further accommodation for each stage, including bed and breakfast, glamping and campsites. On the third day you can add the Milky Way stage, 12.7 km to Klintholm Havn.

Luggage and water. You carry everything you sleep in and eat: sleeping bag and mat for the shelters, a water bottle and provisions for the day. Simple camp sites do not all have drinking water. According to the OpenStreetMap data there is none at the Naturstyrelsen site Slotshaven, but there is at Pomlerende Lejrplads near Liselund. The Camønoen packing list is in the section on gear below.

The GPX file shows the whole trail: 174.7 km, 860 m of ascent and 860 m of descent, on average just under 5 metres of climb per kilometre. It comes from the OpenStreetMap relation of the Camønoen, with heights from the EU-DEM (as of 31 October 2026). The official length of 175 km matches this.

Ulvshale and Nyord

On the Ulvshale peninsula Naturstyrelsen has marked five walking routes through forest, dune, heath and meadow. They start at the Ulvshale Naturcenter and at the car park by the Nyord bridge:

  • Route 1 "Over stock and stone": 2.5 km
  • Route 2 "Views, meadow and heath": 4 km
  • Route 3 "In the tracks of the tipper wagons to the Skansen": 1.5 km
  • Route 4 "The fairytale primeval forest": 3 km
  • Route 5 "Airing your thoughts": 1.5 km (short tour) or 2.5 km (long tour)

According to Naturstyrelsen the circular path on Ulvshale is passable by wheelchair. On the shore meadows of Ulvshale and Nyord you must keep to paths and tracks so that birds and grazing animals are not disturbed; in the winter half-year some paths can be partly under water. On Nyord the old track "Under Grøfterne" runs from the Hyldevang Naturcenter along the meadows into the village. More about the island is on the page Nyord, about the beach on the page Ulvshale and in the bike routes on Møn.

Gear and rules

The packing list for the Camønoen (museerne.dk) also suits day hikes: good shoes and two pairs of socks, a windproof and waterproof jacket, a sun hat and sun protection, first aid and blister plasters, a water bottle and provisions, and a map or GPS. Drink plenty, especially on the cliff sections. Then there are the rules on site:

  • Dogs: welcome, but on a lead (Naturstyrelsen, museerne.dk). In the park at Liselund, cycling and pushing bicycles are not allowed.
  • Falling stones and collapses: At Møns Klint there are collapses every year, most likely in winter and spring. You stay at your own risk and must observe the barriers.
  • Forbidden: climbing the cliff away from stairs and paths, and throwing stones or objects over the edge. Naturstyrelsen calls both life-threatening.
  • Camping: on the Camønoen only at designated sites. Naturstyrelsen also names free camping in the forest Hegnede Skov north of Stege.
  • Parking: at the GeoCenter 45 DKK, free at Camp Møns Klint and at Liselund (Naturstyrelsen, moensklint.dk, as of October 2026).

For the weather and the best time to go, the page Weather on Møn gives monthly figures. The GeoCenter is closed from 31 October 2026 to 20 March 2027, but the paths stay open.

Where to stay: shelters and accommodation

You book shelters and campsites run by Naturstyrelsen at book.naturstyrelsen.dk. At Møns Klint Naturstyrelsen names Lille Ørnebjerg and Storeklint as bookable sites, and at the Hyldevang Naturcenter on Nyord four shelters and a fire hut that must be booked in advance (as of October 2026). Along the Camønoen museerne.dk lists accommodation for each stage, including shelters, bed and breakfast, glamping and campsites; some are open only in summer.
