Puttgarden–Rødby ferry to Møn

From Puttgarden on Fehmarn you reach Møn by taking the ferry to Rødby and then driving about 83 km overland. There is no ferry directly to Møn; the ship docks at Rødby on Lolland. The crossing takes 45 minutes. Beyond Rødby you drive on the E47 motorway across Lolland and Falster as far as the Farø Bridge, then on road 287 over the island of Bogø to Møn. From Rødby to Stege, the main town on the island, takes about 65 minutes. There are no charges on the road, only the ferry costs money.

1. Driving to Puttgarden. The ferry port is at the north of Fehmarn (Fährhafenstrasse, 23769 Puttgarden). From Hamburg it is about 150 km via the A1 and the B207, roughly 100 minutes; from Lübeck about 90 km, roughly 65 minutes; and from Kiel about 92 km, roughly 80 minutes (as of October 2026, without traffic jams).
2. Check-in and ferry. According to Scandlines you need to be checked in at the port no later than 15 minutes before departure. The crossing to Rødby takes 45 minutes, the ship covers about 20 km, and sails every half hour during the day. Departures and prices are in the ferry block further down. You can book directly with Scandlines.
3. Arriving in Rødby. The port is at the end of the E47 motorway (Færgestationsvej 5, 4970 Rødby). You drive from the ship straight onto the E47 heading north.
4. E47 across Lolland and Falster. The Sydmotorvejen runs for about 56 km to Farø, which is roughly 37 minutes' driving time. On the way it crosses Lolland and Falster. There is no toll.
5. Farø Bridge. Between Falster and Farø runs the Farø high bridge, a cable-stayed bridge 1,726 m long, opened on 4 June 1985. You do not need the second bridge to Zealand (1,596 m) for Møn.
6. Road 287 via Bogø. On Farø you leave the motorway. A causeway from 1979 leads to Bogø, and another from 1943 on via Barholm to Møn. In total it is about 24 km on the country road to Stege, roughly 25 minutes.
7. Stege and the island. From Stege it is another 21 km or so to the GeoCenter at Møns Klint, roughly 26 minutes.

Timetable from the ferry to Stege

From casting off in Puttgarden, allow about 1 hour 45 minutes of pure driving and ferry time to Stege: 45 minutes for the crossing, 37 minutes on the E47 and about 25 minutes on road 287. On top of that comes the wait at the port if you do not drive straight onto the ship.

Alternative via Zealand and Kalvehave

Instead of going over Bogø, you can continue to Zealand beyond the Farø Bridge and reach Møn over the Dronning Alexandrines Bro. The bridge, 746 m long and in use since 1943, connects Kalvehave on Zealand with Koster on Møn and is toll-free. From Rødby this route is about 85 km, roughly 70 minutes, so only a few minutes more than via Bogø. It makes sense if you want to do something on Zealand beforehand, for example in Vordingborg. Otherwise, stay on road 287.

Puttgarden–Rødby ferry: departures, prices and booking

The ferry sails every half hour during the day, and the crossing takes 45 minutes. Scandlines sets the price for each date individually, with no fixed seasonal scale; an ETS surcharge is added to the crossing. You only see the price once you enter the date and vehicle in the booking system. So compare several days if you are flexible, and book early. For summer 2027 the crossings cannot be booked yet; they can be booked up to 31 January 2027 (as of 15 October 2026). The Rostock–Gedser ferry, by contrast, can be booked for the whole of 2027. Cyclists and foot passengers check in at their own areas, cars in the marked lanes.

Puttgarden–Rødby or Rostock–Gedser

Both ferries take you to the island of Møn, and they differ in crossing time and road distance. Puttgarden–Rødby takes 45 minutes and has 83 km of road, Rostock–Gedser takes approx. 2 hours and has 74 km of road. Which route is shorter overall depends on where you are coming from. The table adds up the drive to the port, the crossing and the road to Stege, without check-in, waiting time, breaks and traffic jams (road times from OpenStreetMap routing, as of October 2026):

The road distances to the ferry are 426 km to Puttgarden and 473 km to Rostock from Münster, and 609 km to Puttgarden and 448 km to Rostock from Dresden (OpenStreetMap routing, as of October 2026). From Hamburg, Lübeck, Münster and the west, the route via Fehmarn is clearly shorter. From Berlin both routes take almost the same time, and from Dresden Rostock is just ahead; then departure times and price decide. From Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you go from Rostock. From Fehmarn to the chalk cliffs

If you are heading from Fehmarn to the chalk cliffs, you go to Møns Klint in Denmark, on the east coast of the island: a 45-minute ferry crossing and about 103 km by road to the GeoCenter, roughly 90 minutes. The chalk wall is up to 128 m high and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 13 July 2025. Photos and notes on the descent are with the chalk cliffs of Møn. As a day trip from Fehmarn it is a long way; better to stay two or three nights in a holiday home on Møn or on a campsite.

Border crossing and customs

Take a valid identity card or passport, including for children. Denmark may carry out checks at the border. You may only bring in alcohol and tobacco in the permitted quantities; the current allowances are given by German customs at zoll.de. Pets travel with you if they have an EU pet passport; dogs may stay in the car during the crossing.
