Day trip from Copenhagen to Møn

Route and day plan. By car or by train and bus to Stege, the GeoCenter Møns Klint and Liselund

From Copenhagen to Stege on Møn it is 119 km, about 1.5 hours by car. A day trip works well if you start early and keep to three stops: Stege, the GeoCenter Møns Klint with the chalk cliffs, and Liselund. Without a car, take the train to Vordingborg and then bus 660R to Stege.

By car

Drive south on the Sydmotorvejen (E47/E55) to Vordingborg and take Primærrute 59 from there via Kalvehave to Stege. On the way you cross the Dronning Alexandrines Bro. It links Kalvehave on Zealand with Koster near Stege on Møn, is 746 m long and opened on 30 May 1943. It does not cross Bogø but runs from Kalvehave straight to Koster. The bridge is toll-free.

Parking at the GeoCenter Møns Klint costs 45 DKK, and in Stege 30 DKK for up to 24 hours at the museum car park (moensklint.dk and museerne.dk, as of October 2026). According to Naturstyrelsen, parking at Camp Møns Klint and at Liselund is free.

Without a car: train and bus

Without a car you take the regional train from København H to Vordingborg and from there bus 660R to Stege. The times come from Rejseplanen (queried on 30 and 31 October 2026, timetable valid until 13 January 2027):

LegConnectionJourney time

Vordingborg to StegeBus 660R, about every half hour during the day45 min
København H to StegeRegional train and bus 660R1 hr 49 min

Prices: København H to Vordingborg is available on DSB Orange from 28 kr. (dsb.dk, as of 31 October 2026), and Rejseplanen shows the bus fare with the connection. From Hamburg, bahn.de quotes prices from €73.98 for 6 November 2026. From Malmö you need a second Danish ticket from København in addition to the Öresund ticket. How to take your bike on the train and bus is described in the section on travelling without a car on the page Getting to the island of Møn.

In Stege you change for the cliffs. Line 678 Stege–Klintholm Havn–GeoCenter Møns Klint is a summer line and in 2026 ran from 29 March to 31 October with five trips a day. Line 667 runs all year from Stege via Magleby and Borre to Klintholm Havn, and from the Magleby stop it is 5.5 km to the cliff (vordingborg.dk, as of October 2026). Check the return journey in advance, as the number of trips is limited. More ways of getting there are on the page Getting to the island of Møn.

Day plan: Stege, Møns Klint, Liselund

The plan assumes a departure from Copenhagen around 08:00. The times are suggestions; the opening hours come from the operators.

Morning: Stege

Stege is the first stop after the bridge. At the car park of Møns Museum the walk begins to the Mølleporten, the only surviving one of the three medieval town gates, and to the harbour. In 2026 the museum was open from 28 March to 18 October, Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 14:00 and daily from 10:00 to 16:00 in the summer holidays; the admission of 65 DKK includes the Mølleporten. Without the museum, an hour is enough for the old town.

Midday and afternoon: GeoCenter and cliffs

From Stege it is around 20 km to the GeoCenter Møns Klint. The exhibition costs 155 DKK, 10 DKK less online. The paths to the cliffs are freely accessible. The GeoCenter lists three routes:

  • Fossilruten: 2.3 km, 1 hr 15 min, partly on the beach and partly in the forest, with a fossil site.
  • Biodiversitetsruten: 6.1 km, 2 hrs, hilly forest paths along the cliff edge.
  • Klintekongens Rige: 14.5 km, 6 hrs, and therefore not a day trip programme alongside everything else.

For a day trip the Fossilruten fits, or a walk to the Maglevandstrappen with its 497 steps, the longest staircase in Denmark (Naturstyrelsen). That leaves around three hours for the exhibition and the cliffs. Everything about the cliffs is on the page Chalk cliffs of Møn, and more tours are on the page Hiking on Møn.

Late afternoon: Liselund or Nyord

Liselund is around 6 km from the GeoCenter. The park is open daily from 07:00 to 22:00 and costs nothing; the castle can only be visited with a guided tour in summer, in 2026 from 1 July to 30 September (85 DKK, liselundpark.dk). The page Liselund Castle has details.

If you would rather see meadows and water, drive on the way back to Nyord instead of Liselund, 14 km north-west of Stege. Driving is forbidden in the village, so you park at its entrance. For a meal by the sea, Klintholm Havn is 7 km from the GeoCenter; the island's restaurants are listed on the page Restaurants on Møn.

Day plan without a car: an example with bus 678

By bus the day is long but doable, because the summer line 678 has five trips a day. The example uses the October 2026 timetables: regional train and bus 660R on a Monday (9 November 2026), bus 678 with the times of the last summer days (30 and 31 October 2026). The 2027 summer timetables were not yet fixed at the end of October 2026; check the times then on rejseplanen.dk.

From Stege to the GeoCenter the bus takes 41 minutes, and 47 minutes back. A later bus from the GeoCenter ran at 18:30 and reached Stege at 19:17; for that one, check the connections on to København H on Rejseplanen. Stege or Liselund do not fit into this plan if you want to give the GeoCenter a proper visit. For more than the cliff, it is better to take a night in Stege or Borre, for example in a bed & breakfast.

Without the summer bus in winter, only line 667 is left. The GeoCenter is then closed, but the paths to the cliff are open; from the Magleby stop it is 5.5 km on foot.

Winter and low season

The GeoCenter is closed from 31 October 2026 to 20 March 2027. During this time the cliffs, the forest paths, the park at Liselund and Stege remain open. Naturstyrelsen names winter and spring as the time when falls from the cliff are most frequent. Observe the barriers and keep away from the wall. More about the weather and the months is on the page Weather and best time to visit.

Is an overnight stay worth it?

One day is enough for the cliffs, Stege and a harbour. For the beaches, an evening in the Dark Sky Park or a longer hike you need more time; you will find a plan for three days under Møn in 3 days. The Dark Sky Park Møn and Nyord is only worth it at night. You will find places to stay under Holiday homes on Møn and Hotels on Møn.
